The prototype detector to search for dark matter create Novosibirsk – RIA Novosti

NOVOSIBIRSK, January 3 – RIA Novosti. Scientists at the Institute of Nuclear Physics SB RAS plan to in the next year or two to develop a prototype of the detector to search for dark matter, told RIA Novosti Deputy Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics for Research Yuri Tikhonov.

The dark matter – the invisible substance, the presence of which can be judged only by its gravitational influence, it does not interact with electromagnetic waves, that is, does not emit, absorb or reflect any light.

“We know that it (dark matter) is almost non-marking, and here the main task – dramatically lower detection threshold to a minimum level, which is, in principle, physically possible. There is quite substantial progress, and we hope that the prototype of this detector can be in the next year or two is created, “- said Tikhonov.

The scientist noted that the search for dark matter is planned to be carried out with the help of liquefied noble gas, in particular argon. Creating a prototype detector in this case does not mean that the very search for dark matter is possible in Novosibirsk.

“These results will be the basis for creating a detector to search for dark matter. We need low-background underground mines, such as in the Gran Sasso Laboratory ( Italy). We are now entering into a partnership with a large experiment of the laboratory, where we are invited, “- said Tikhonov.

He said that the main task of the scientists – to ensure detection threshold of dark matter to recoil nuclei could be registered . Scientists have found that the most favorable material for the creation of such a detector will be liquid argon. INP conducts studies in the framework of the financing of the Russian Science Foundation (RNF).

“The scale of the preparation of such an experiment 5-7 years. It is an enormous installation of several tens of tons of liquid argon. I think that this decade will be the construction of close to completion. But the purpose in the world – to find dark matter in 2023-2025 year, “- he added.
