London, 14 January 2016, 10:33 – REGNUM Under the ice of Antarctica, geologists found the largest canyon in the world. It is 1,000 km in length, the depth of some of its sections – about 1 km away, says the magazine Geology.
It is still untitled, satellite Canyon found by GPR. It is located in East Antarctica at the Princess Elizabeth Land. Perhaps it is connected with an underground lake is unknown. The history of the facility is also still unclear.
The terrain of the ice continent is still not understood better than the terrain of the planet Mars. So says the lead author of the study Stuart Jamieson from Durham University in the UK.
«Information hidden under ice landscape will allow us to better understand how the ice sheet responds to climate change», – he added.
Previous record belonged canyons Greenland and Arizona (750 and 445 km in length respectively).
