To record values increased in 2016, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere, reports TASS with reference to the statement by the world meteorological organization (WMO).

Globally averaged concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached a symbolic and significant value of 400 parts per million for the first time in 2015 and then increased sharply to a new record high in 2016 amid a very powerful phenomenon El niño.

Experts explain that the levels of CO2 and earlier in certain periods of the year and in certain parts of the planet reached 400 parts per million, However, “never before has this level was not observed in the global average scale for the whole year”, they emphasize.

According to forecasts of the monitoring station greenhouse gases at Mauna Loa (Hawaii, USA), the CO2 concentration will remain at the level of 400 parts per million “for 2016 and will not fall below this level during the lifetime of many generations”. In WMO explain the jump in carbon dioxide concentration the influence of the phenomenon El niño, which began last year and continued to exert a powerful influence over a considerable part of the current year.

This has led to droughts in tropical regions and decrease in the ability of forests and oceans to absorb CO2, and they now absorb only about half the carbon dioxide emissions.
