Experts: the situation with Schiaparelli module will not affect the second stage of the mission “ExoMars” – TASS

MOSCOW, October 22. /TASS/. Emergency situation with the lander Schiaparelli mission “ExoMars” will not affect the second phase of the project, which is scheduled for 2020. It is not excluded that the device could break. This opinion was expressed by the experts of the rocket and space industry, respondents TASS.

“I do not amuse myself special hopes and I think that the module has reached Mars unworkable, that is, after impact, it is unlikely to revive. Most likely it is crashed”, – said the academician of the Russian Academy of cosmonautics named after Tsiolkovsky Alexander Zheleznyakov.

According to him, most likely, the sequence diagram of the descent were far from a settlement and something happened with the propulsion system. “It is therefore possible that the engines have engaged at such a height that the brake failed and the module just hit the surface. There is an assumption,” – said the expert.

Module completed the task partially

He said that the module was partially completed its task. “Completely he fulfilled it would be if there was a landing, not just its elements. Therefore to speak about full success, and complete failure, it is not necessary”, – said Zheleznyakov.

Success is that the orbital module TGO went into orbit around Mars, the instrument and the onboard systems are working properly, and it needs to begin the study of the planet, said the expert.

as for the second phase of the mission “Eczemas”, (planned for 2020), its development will still proceed, said Zheleznyakov.

“In developing the lander Pasteur, of course, will use all the data that has been obtained from Schiaparelli. Everything will continue as planned, taking into account only this landing Schiaparelli, but it does not negatively affect the further implementation of the project “Eczemas”. Will definitely have to make some adjustments, but it is normal operation”, – concluded the expert.

What happens to the mission-2020

Scientific Director of the space policy Institute Ivan Moiseev also believes that the situation with Schiaparelli will not affect the implementation of the second phase of the mission ExoMars, which is scheduled for 2020.

“Because the project is already underway, I think that the experts will continue, but will strengthen the work of the landing. In any case, all will be solved by the leadership of the European space Agency and Roscosmos,” – said he.

Speaking about the situation with the module Schiaparelli, the expert said: “as far As I know, the last signal from Schiaparelli came before starting the engines. Plus, according to my information, the parachute opened normally. But before starting the engines the signal is lost.”

“Could something happen with the engine or loss of orientation of the antenna that transmits the signal. Could there be such an option: the module could land on the stone. If this happens, the machine falls on its side, and the antenna loses the signal stops,” – said Moses.

According to him, the mission Schiaparelli successful and made 50%. “It is because the sharp deceleration of the load chute; here’s a hint for the engineers who will do the Rover for the second phase, which will be in 2020, what needs special attention is paid to the last landing phase. This is after parachute deployment and braking. Special attention should be paid to the recent inclusion engines and direct contact with the surface,” – said the expert.

for Example, he said, you can put spare engines, to introduce a redundant management module, to provide for the possibility of landing on uneven surface.

Module could be dead

the editor of the magazine “news of cosmonautics” Igor Lisov believes that, most likely, the module could “die”, based on the fact that the signal is terminated, is not renewed and the next day is not found.

“the Fact that the signal was lost before the estimated time of landing despite the fact that already was shooting the parachute and was starting the engines, even a short, it should not be there. Because according to the schedule of the descent of the parachute ejection occurs in 31 seconds before landing, and the engine for 30 seconds. That is, the main question is how it on 20 seconds earlier was at the height where you need to turn on the engines,” – said Lisov.

He said that Schiaparelli dumped data during the flight, that is, some measured value, “and from the point of view of the experiment, he is successful on 75%”. “He came to the end, but demonstrated the successful implementation of all previous phases until the ejection of the parachute and the braking start time on the engines,” – said the expert.

According to him, the situation with the Schiaparelli not directly affect the second stage of the “ExoMars” (in 2020), “especially if the Europeans give all the encrypted data and show that the devices worked normally”.

“Mission 2020 should take place, but the Europeans have not yet fully collected money for it. And, of course, media failure during landing Schiaparelli may affect the collection of money for the second phase of the “Eczemas”. Although the main task is to plant there the Rover with set of instruments to search for life,” concluded Lisov.

the Director of ESA, Johann-Dietrich wörner said earlier that the second phase of the programme ExoMars is still in need of funding in the amount of €300 million the Amount of funding should be defined at the Ministerial conference of the countries-participants of the ESA in December of this year.

What happened

the landing of the lander of the Russian-European mission ExoMars Schiaparelli was non-standard, however evidence that it crashed, yet. This was reported earlier, the head of the Department of interplanetary missions of the European centre for space flight control Andrea Accomazzo.

According to him, after the disclosure of the parachutes “not all work out the way we expected,” however, the engines of soft landing system had to work for three or four seconds. It was planned that they will spend 29 seconds. Accomazzo said that the descent parachute was generally regular, however, approximately 50 seconds before the expected landing module has stopped transmitting data.

As noted in a press release ESA, parachute, according to preliminary data, was revealed earlier than anticipated, however data analysis is not yet complete. Also, experts suggest that the motors of the apparatus could be included earlier than anticipated, “at the height still to be determined”. ESA said that the module received 600 megabytes of data to be decrypted.

the Agency also stressed that Schiaparelli, who was to work out the landing before the second part of the mission “Eczemas”, transferred most of the data necessary to verify this algorithm.

Schiaparelli was supposed to land on Mars on Wednesday, at 17:48 GMT on the plateau of Meridian. However, the signal from the module is interrupted at the time of descent, reported in the ESA.

Partial data from the module while landing on the Ground gave the relay satellite NASA “Mars Express”. They did not allow the experts to make any conclusions about the state of the machine. The main objective of Schiaparelli is testing the technology of the controlled descent and landing on Mars. In addition, the instrument module had to be written during the descent in the atmosphere the wind speed, humidity, pressure and temperature at the time of planting.
