Scientists are exploring the tomb of Christ and recreate its original appearance – RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, 27 Jun – RIA Novosti. Scientists for the first time in 500 years has removed a marble slab with the burial place of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre to find out what initially looked like a tomb, says the magazine National Geographic.

Earlier it was reported that Edicule — the chapel over the Grave of the Lord will be restored for the first time since its construction in 1810. It is here, above the tomb of Christ Holy fire lights up. Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Resurrection) in Jerusalem was built in the IV century and since then rebuilt several times. Marble plate on the coffin was placed approximately in 1555, clarifies the issue.

“Marble slab was withdrawn and we were surprised to find beneath it a huge amount of stones,” quoted archaeologist Fredrik Hibert.

According to him, scientists will now have to spend a long analysis “to see the original surface of the stone, which, according to legend, was laid the body of Christ.” The study will determine how the originally looked like the tomb of Jesus and why Helen, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine, it was considered the main Shrine of the Christian world.

According to the gospel, after Christ died on the cross on mount Calvary, his body was put into one of the rooms carved into the mountain caves, destined for burial. It on the third day according to the Scriptures, was the resurrection of Christ. Excavations on Golgotha in the fourth century was led by Elena equal to the Apostles, which supposedly found the cross on which Jesus was crucified, and then he founded the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
