Russian divers set a world record off the coast of Antarctica – BBC News

The world record dive off the coast of Antarctica renewed Russian divers. Participants organized Tatarstan branch of the Russian Geographical Society scientific expedition “Antarctica 100″ sank to a depth of 97 meters.

The dive was carried out at the island of Deception, according to TASS. The name of the island with the English translation as a trick or deception. But there is no deception.

“The record was recorded by the World Underwater Federation (CMAS), the data will be submitted for inclusion in the record books of Russia and Europe”, – assured the press secretary of the Tatarstan branch of the Russian Geographical Society Alina Iskanderova.

Members of the expedition have tested the latest Russian equipment for scuba diving and deep-sea slopes technique worked in extreme conditions. However, Russian scientists sovey goal is not reached: they hoped to conquer the 100-meter depth.

Russian divers continue to dive, weather permitting. Meanwhile, in the South Shetland expected a violent storm.

The previous record dive at the South Pole of the planet has established Soviet divers. Depth of immersion time was about 20 meters.

The expedition “Antarctica 100″ started in Kazan on November 27. Its purpose – to study the depths of the Southern Ocean, to explore the possibilities of the human body, test the latest equipment for diving.

The expedition members live on the vessel near the Russian research station “Bellingshausen”, where they spend dive.

In Kazan expedition expects to return to the New Year. Divers have brought the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, the Torah and the Koran to show that people from different cultures can live together in an extreme environment, helping each other.
