Paleontologists: The monkeys arrived in North America 21 million years ago – REGNUM

Washington, April 22, 2016, 10:27 – REGNUM American scientists from the University of Florida found that monkeys 21 million years ago, sailed from South America to North America before the two continents united by an isthmus, according to the journal Nature.

this is the conclusion, scientists have come after the structural analysis of seven small teeth found during the expansion of the Panama canal. The teeth belonged to a South American monkey Panamacebus Transitus. The find suggests that the monkeys reached the North American continent much earlier than previously thought.

To do this, 21 million years ago ape somehow sailed more than 160 kilometers, because at that time, North and South America has were not connected by an isthmus of Panama, was formed about 3.5 million years ago.

Scientists believe that the monkeys inadvertently swam this distance, hitting into the water on some wood ruins. It is possible that in the same way the monkey got from Africa to South America more than 37 million years ago.
