Japanese scientists have created a new type of ultra-strong glass – is light, thin and extremely hard material is created with the use of aluminum oxide.

In case of successful implementation in the commercial production development can be applied in various fields, for example, in the manufacture of unbreakable displays smartphone or toughened automotive glass.

Created material is classified as oxide glass, and consists mainly of silicon dioxide.

increase the strength it gives to the presence of an additional quantity of alumina.

In order to increase the mechanical strength of the glass, the scientists previously tried to increase the proportion of aluminum oxide in its composition.

However, all these attempts have so far ended in failure, as the mixture immediately crystallized after contact with the walls of the container.

In order to achieve the desired effect, the scientists of the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, led by Dr. Atsunobu Masuno using oxygen with which managed to raise the ingredients in air and mix them laser.

As a result, they said, turned the glass – a colorless, clear and incredibly strong.

Its modulus of elasticity (the so-called Young’s modulus, which characterizes the ability of resistance to longitudinal strain and talking about the hardness of the material) was higher than that of some metals, and is close to the modulus of elasticity of steel.

Another mechanical properties – Vickers hardness – is comparable to the best results, fixed in the past for oxide glasses .

“We’ll find a way to start the new material in mass production. We are going to profit from the technology within five years “, – quotes the words of Dr. Masuno newspaper Asahi Shinbun.

The results of research published in the journal Scientific Reports.
