Planetary scientists explained the unusual slope of the lunar orbit – REGNUM

Paris, 26 November 2015, 13:41 – REGNUM French scientists have found that the cause of abnormal inclination of the axis of rotation of the Moon to the Earth’s orbital plane lies in the collision with the Earth protoplanets.

According to the widespread theory of the origin of the Moon, in the distant past the Earth collided with a protoplanet that led to the formation fragments, from which emerged and satellite. However, in this case, the degree of inclination of the lunar orbit to the ecliptic – the plane of rotation of the Earth around the Sun – amounted to just one degree, while its value is now equal to five.

Researchers at the University of the Côte d’Azur in Nice (France) with the help of computer modeling determined that about 4.5 billion years ago, Earth’s gravitational field has got a heavy body that rotates in an orbit 100 million years, and influenced the trajectory the motion of the moon.

Then, the planetoid fell to Earth, which led to an increase in the inclination of the orbit of the moon to ten degrees (value over time reduced to five today). In addition, the upper layers of the earth were rich in valuable elements such as gold, iron, and platinum. Detailed results of research published in the journal Nature.
