Staff of the Norwegian Centre for Climate Research Bjerknes believe that the Sahara desert twice as old as previously mentioned. Age it can reach 7 million years.

Climatologists believe that the Sahara was formed as a result of the drying up of the ancient Tethys Sea.

It was previously thought that desertification in North Africa began about 3 million. years ago. However, scientists in Norway believe that the age of the Sahara can reach 7 million years. Climate studies have shown that the ancient Tethys Sea and raise the platform of the Arabian Peninsula influenced the amount of summer monsoon. This led to the formation of deserts.

Magazine Nature co-authored with Dr. Zhang Zhongshan published studies that confirm that prolonged dry spells have begun to appear more 8 million years ago. About 7 million years ago, the sea gradually eased, and that weakened the African monsoon. This fact tells us that desertification and, eventually forming the Sahara may have begun earlier than expected.
