However, the leadership of the Moscow State University regularly expressed dissatisfaction with the current rating system leading world universities and believes that the position occupied by Russian universities do not correspond to the real situation.

In 2012, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to ensure that by 2020 five Russian universities were in the top hundred most prestigious world rankings.
