Accident or emergency with the spacecraft “Progress”. Dossier – TASS

TASS-DOSSIER /Inna Klimacheva/. 1 Dec 2016 launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome carrier rocket “Soyuz-U” with automatic cargo ship “Progress MC-04″, which was supposed to deliver 2.5 tons of various cargo to the International space station (ISS) that ended with a crash.

On the 383-th second of the flight in the work area of the engine of the third stage of the rocket has stopped receiving telemetry from the ship.

the Press service of the state Corporation “Roscosmos” confirmed the loss of “Progress” at an altitude of 190 km on goal, most of the debris burned in the dense layers of the atmosphere.

Family of ships “Progress”

Progress – family of automatic transport spacecraft. Intended for delivery into orbit of different cargo (fuel, equipment, oxygen, food for crew) and also to adjust the orbit of the station.

Developer and manufacturer of Rocket and space Corporation “Energia” them. S. P. Korolev (Korolev, Moscow region). Was created specifically to service the orbiting space stations. All were developed five modifications: Progress (operated in 1978-1990.), “Progress M” (1989-2009), Progress M1 (2000-2004), “Progress M-M” (2008-2015) and is now operated by “Progress MS” (first run – December 21, 2015). In addition, two special vehicle-module was used in the construction of the ISS: “Progress M-DC1″ delivered to the station docking compartment “pierce” (2001), “Progress M-МИМ2″ is a small research module “Search” (2009).

the Cargo “Progress” ensure the livelihoods of stations “Salyut-6″ (1978-1981), “Salyut-7″ (1982-1985), the orbital complex Mir (1986-2001). Currently service the ISS (since 2000).

Accidents and contingencies

During the operation Progress (the first ship went in flight on 20 January 1978) there have been two accidents at startup (24 August 2011 and 28 April 2015) and one emergency in orbit during docking with the station “Mir” (25 June 1997). In addition, it recorded 8 emergency situations in the course of cargo ships docks with the orbital stations. In the above statistics do not include the event on December 1, 2016

August 30, 1994 ship “Progress M-24″ (launched on 25 August from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) during the automatic docking with the orbital station “Mir” has faced with its transition compartment. “Progress” and “the World of” serious injuries have not received. This was the second attempt to Board the station, the first (27 August) was also not successful. On 2 September the ship was docked in manual mode with teleoperation control management.

June 25, 1997 when relocation “Progress M-34″ (launched on 6 April from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) crashed into the Spektr module of the space station “Mir”, which led to damage to the solar panels and depressurization of the module. June 24 the ship was separated from the station to practice docking in manual mode. The experiment was led by cosmonaut Vasily Tsibliev. Three are located in the station astronauts were not injured, having time to transition batten down the hatch. To re-dock it was decided not to undertake, and on 2 July 1997, the ship was sunk in the Pacific ocean.

August 7, 1997 failed to implement the relocation of “Progress M-35″ (launched on 5 July from Baikonur rocket Soyuz – U”), which was part of the orbital complex “Mir”. The reason is correctly incorporated information about the rendezvous and docking specialists of the mission control Center. During the re-docking, August 18, failed system of rendezvous and docking “Course”, and had to go automatic to manual mode.

28 November 2001 during the docking of “Progress M1-7″ (launched on 26 November from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) with ISS did not happen automatically fixing the vehicle due to hitting a foreign object into the docking station module “Zvezda”. To resolve this problem, it took a spacewalk cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Mikhail Tyurin. 3 Dec staff ship docked with the station.

26 Dec 2004 automatic docking with the ISS ship “Progress M-51″ (launched on 24 December from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) took place with some delay. Due to the lack of a signal controlling the process of docking an American communications ship “stuck” for 30 minutes in idle mode at a distance of 160 m from the station.

26 Oct 2006 during the docking of “Progress M-58″ (launched on October 23 from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) with the ISS have any emergency situation. After mechanical capture during retraction of the vehicle with the station has not developed one of the antennas of “Progress”. The ship was able to dock with the ISS only at the second attempt, which took place on the same day.

may 1 2010 when berthing to the ISS ship “Progress M-05M” (launched April 28 from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) there is a failure in the system rendezvous and docking “Course”. In the end, the cosmonaut Oleg Kotov had to manually docking the spacecraft with the station, what was done in the same day.

2 July 2010 “Progress M-06M” (launched June 30 from the Baikonur cosmodrome rocket “Soyuz-U”) was not able to dock to the ISS. The ship flew past the station due to failure of the system rendezvous and docking “Course”, the crew was not able to take control and dock the Progress manually. The ship was withdrawn from the station and two days later, July 4, docked in automatic mode.

24 Aug 2011 the crash ended the run of the ship “Progress M-12M” carrier rocket “Soyuz-U” was launched from Baikonur. 325 seconds of flight there was an emergency shutdown of the engine of the third stage of the rocket. The reason is the blockage of the path of feed of fuel. The wreckage of “Progress” and “Soyuz-U” fell on the territory of the Altai Republic. The ship was supposed to deliver to the ISS more than 2.6 tons of various cargoes.

24 July 2012 “Progress M-15M”, on the eve undocked from the ISS to test a new system for rendezvous and docking “Rate-AT”, could not be part of the orbital complex. At a distance of about 15 km from the ISS equipment vehicle gave a warning signal about a possible accident, and the system of “Course-ON” took “Progress” to a safe distance from the station. Dock the ship was only at the second attempt – July 29. The reason for the failed docking was the failure of the equipment.

April 28, 2015 launched from Baikonur the carrier rocket “Soyuz-2.1 a” was not able to put into orbit cargo spacecraft “Progress M-27M” cargo for the ISS. May 8, he’s out of control de-orbited and burned in the dense layers of the atmosphere fragments of the ship fell into the waters of the Pacific ocean, 900 km West of the Marquesas Islands. The reason – the non-separation of the third stage of “Soyuz” and “Progress”. The Commission’s investigation into the accident found that the incident occurred because of depressurization of the tanks of the carrier with an oxidizing agent and fuel. This resulted in gaps in the research and development works on the joint use of the rocket and spacecraft.
