AMD Zen will debut under the commercial name RYZEN – 3DNews

In the leaked official slides relating to the new desktop 14nm AMD Zen under the brand RYZEN (the official launch will take place just a few hours). Flagship chips, previously known under the codename Summit Ridge and will include 8 cores (16 threads), 20 MB of cache memory L2 and L3 to maintain the frequency of 3.4 GHz and above and the automatic overclocking function.

Auto-overclocking will be possible thanks to the function XFR (decrease Extended Frequency Range — literally, “extended frequency range”). She is able to raise the operating frequency of a processor above the officially declared maximum even for turbo mode, if the cooling system (air, water or nitrogen).

AMD has confirmed that the flagship processors will be enabled for 512 Kbytes of L2 cache per core and 16 MB cache L3 shared access, thus, 20 MB cache, 8-core chips. The caching system includes a new more advanced unit advanced selection commands, which identifies the more important data based on the study of models of access to them for certain applications. These are the most important data are marked and moved in a faster cache for faster access.

In addition to the function XFR implemented two related technologies, which have received the names of Pure Power and Precision Boost. The first real-time monitors the temperature, frequency and voltage of the chip through sensors that are distributed between the nuclei of Zen. The sensor data are sent to the unit Infinity Control Fabric, which rebuilds the power mode of the chip is optimal under the current situation. The task of technology is to achieve energy consumption of no higher than required for efficient operation of each block at the current load. The results in energy consumption, according to the schedule radically reduced.

Precision Boost — the other side of the same coin. This technology works in conjunction with the Pure Power to achieve maximum performance without exceeding the stated teplopaket. In fact, we are talking about turbo mode of the new generation. The Precision Boost is able to adjust frequencies on the fly without any delay and with high accuracy — increments of 25 MHz.

the New Zen CPU architecture — one of the most anticipated and ambitious projects in the history of AMD. Today the market share of AMD in the desktop x86 CPU market is very much reduced, and the company has long been trying to compete with Intel in terms of pure performance. Zen should be a new chance for AMD in this region after the appearance of the Bulldozer architecture five years ago.

Given the fact that the creation of architecture Zen engaged the famous engineer Jim Keller (Jim Keller) who had formerly been responsible for a very successful and competitive the Athlon XP and Athlon64, the company has a good chance to regain some situation. Zen is expected to come to market in 2017, for the long haul. The launch will take place in the first quarter of 2017.
