Hackers have learned to listen through the headphones – Popular Mechanics

Israeli cybersecurity experts have written malware Speake (a)r, which uses the built-in function reassignment of the connectors in the sound chips of RealTek brand. Modern audiocopy for playing and recording sound that are installed in most desktops and laptops have two sockets for headphones and microphone and the third universal Jack for headset, headphones or microphone.

When you connect a device to the sound card automatically detects it and depending on it can software to remap the function of the connector. For example, if you connect microphone to headphone Jack this connector can be used for playback and for recording. Hacker program Speake (a)r just able to forcibly reassign the connector, turning is connected to the computer… earphones into microphones!

the Researchers conducted a laboratory experiment using a headphone brand Sennheiser. The program is successfully switched socket with headphones, turning them from the sound output device to input device, allowing the hackers to make a high quality recording of the conversation in the room from a distance of six meters. The method works both on computers with Windows operating system and MacOS — point, the audio chip was a RealTek brand.
