Throughout its evolution, humanity may enjoy the opportunity to explore the emotionally stressful situations, observing the behavior of other people in them. This social learning, which is effective in order to avoid the risk in the future. Children, for example, learn how to behave in the adult example.

However, the indirect experience can work the other way – to facilitate the transfer of fear and anxiety among family members and persons living in the vicinity

.

The psychologists of the Karolinska Institute conducted a study that showed how fear spread in the society, and how it can be countered. Participants were shown a video in which “demonstrator” looked at the picture of two angry men. When it is shown to one of the persons he received an unpleasant shock to the wrist. In most cases, the fear of the demonstrator was transferred to participants who began to show disturbing reaction to the same pictures.

Next, the researchers tested what would happen if the participants first see a film about the demonstrator, who calmly looking at the same pictures, his whole appearance indicating that the situation is safe, and images – are harmless. It was found that in this case spread fear did not happen. However, if the same pictures for the first time to show people without relaxing demonstrator, it was not possible to achieve a positive effect.

– We have found that the earlier safe experience in the presence of another person opposed the transfer of social fear, – says study co-author Armit Golkar from the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute

.

In another embodiment of the experiment, the “safe” and “dangerous” demonstrators were different people that abolished the effect of the transfer made safe experience.
