The astronauts of the 44th expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) will eat a salad first, which has been grown in microgravity in the container Veggie.

Until recently, experiments with plants on the ISS conducted exclusively for research purposes. After carrying out all the necessary tests on Earth astronauts were allowed for the first time to use the vegetables for food.

July 8 astronaut Scott Kelly put the so-called “nutritional pillow” Veggie red romaine lettuce seeds which were exposed to red and blue light for photosynthesis. At the moment, the salad is ready and before eating his food the astronauts will only need to wipe the leaves disinfectant wipes.

In NASA noted that growing plants in space is a key step on the road to travel to other planets, in particular to Mars.

Earlier, NASA released a photo of the International Space Station (ISS) against the background of a full moon , and the speed of the ISS is 5 miles per second (about 28 970 km / h – approx. Ed.).
