Under Vladimir discovered the remains of an ancient Roman temple – Russian newspaper

Archaeologists have discovered in the Vladimir region remains of the temple of the XII century, presumably built by architects of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, Interfax reported.

According to the archaeologists of the Institute of Archaeology of Russian Academy of Sciences, found under Vladimir ancient temple absolutely unique not only for Russia and Western Europe, where a similar architecture practically does not occur.

– There are a couple of cathedrals in Northern Italy, which does not even look like the architecture and some of the details. In general, nothing like this – leads words of the head of news of the archaeological expedition of the RAS.

The excavations were carried out in the Church of Nativity in Bogolyubov, founded in 1158 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. Church of the Nativity of the Virgin was destroyed in 1722, then in its place was built a new one. Experts believe that giving birth to the ancient temple have made specially invited Italian masters who worked with the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

The nickname “Barbarossa” Emperor Frederick was due to red beard (from Italian barba rossa). Emperor Frederick, convinced Christian, in 1189 took part in the Third Crusade in the Holy Land together with the French King Philip II Augustus, and the English King Richard the Lionheart.
