The study, based on experiments with mice showed that in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease certain cells of the immune system, which normally protects the brain, begins to absorb an important amino acid arginine. Scientists have found that blocking this process with the help of the drug difluoromethylornithine prevents the accumulation of sticky protein, or plaques in the brain and memory loss – two important symptom of a disease. The use of this drug, which is normally used to treat certain types of cancer, and significantly improved the performance of mice on tests of memory.

According to experts, it is important that the new data are consistent with previous observations that people with Alzheimer’s arginine level in the brain is reduced.
