The specialists of the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University in cooperation with Russian and foreign colleagues learned how to grow organic semiconductor crystals with a record high svetoizluchatelnoy ability. This crystal growth were applied simple and cheap technologies that were considered hopeless. It is alleged that the development could revolutionize organic optoelectronics. With organic optoelectronics linked hopes for the emergence of light, flexible and transparent electronics new generation of devices, including svetotranzistory and lasers that will press traditional silicon products. There are two methods of cultivation of organic semiconductor crystals: vapor-phase crystallization and mortar cultivation. Until now it was thought that the first is preferable, since it allows to obtain a clean structure. Group of MSU specialists opted for mortar growing, primarily due to the simplicity and low cost technologies. The crystals grown from a solution of the MSU, better crystals were obtained by crystallization from a vapor phase on the quantum efficiency (the ratio of emitted to absorbed energy): 60% vs. 38%. Scientists suggest that the mortar growing suppressed some internal channels of relaxation that provide the absorption of the energy without radiation. Another plus “mortar” techniques – the ability to grow crystals on the surface of the solution instead of the solid support. Since the boundary between two media has a perfect surface, grown on crystals on its quality and electronic characteristics are not inferior grown out of steam. According to the researchers, the crystals obtained are so smooth that they can be used for field-effect transistors, where the quality is indispensable. Source: State University
