Scientists from Yale counted the number of trees in the world – BBC Russian

The number of trees in the world more than three trillion, which is greater than previously thought, according to a study of scientists from the American Yale University.

Scientists led by Thomas Crowther estimated the total number of trees on the basis of satellite images and research in selected areas. According to these data, total 3.04 trillion in the world of trees.

Most of the trees growing in the tropics, but the highest density – from the boreal forest, that is, the coniferous forests of the temperate zone, located south of the tundra.

The reason for this study was the request of the youth organization working under the aegis of the UN, and set out to plant a billion trees. The organization appealed to Crowther asking slow if global warming if they reach their goal, but he came to the conclusion that he could not answer, does not know the exact number of trees in the world.

According to Crowther, set the number of them can not be regarded as an indicator of good or bad. However, as he stresses, ultimately the number of trees in the world define people: every year is cut down to 15 billion, accounting for only 5 billion in new, and so every year the number of trees annually reduced by 10 billion.

As Computer models have shown to the human civilization on Earth had 5.6 trillion trees.
