The data show that in Europe, cardiovascular diseases cause more than four million deaths each year (45 percent of all cases death). However, this figure has decreased in some countries, where now cancers kill more men than heart disease: Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, UK, Norway and Israel. At the same time in Denmark and Israel disorders in the circulatory system ceased to be the main cause of death for women.

For example, in 2011 in France due to cancer died 92 thousand people, while due to problems with the heart and blood vessels – 64 thousand people. In Spain, the figures were 67 and 53 thousand people, and in the UK – 87 and 79 thousand, respectively. However, in Eastern Europe and most countries outside of the EU, cardiovascular diseases are still in first place in the number of deaths.

Although the authors note that their study can not explain the specific causes changes in mortality, they suggest that the main role was played by measures aimed at monitoring and early identification of problems with the cardiovascular system.
