Appeared out of nowhere blue lakes in Antarctica frightened scientists – Lenta.ru

On the surface of the East Antarctic ice sheet there is a lot of blue lakes, above all on the glacier Langhovde. This phenomenon has frightened scientists, as similar phenomena have long observed in Greenland, where they point to the inevitable melting of glaciers. On the discovery reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, and short of it says Gizmodo

Nadlednikovye lake -. “Ponds” with the melt water arising when the warm summer air heats the surface of the glaciers, has long been committed on the territory of Greenland. These lakes are considered as a sign of global warming and the inevitable destruction of the ice sheets: water penetrates deep into the glacier and “lubricates” its base, which further leads to cracks. This process is considered to be one of the reasons for the accelerating melting of the Greenland glaciers: in 2011-2014 they lost nearly a trillion tons of water

Now it turned out that nadlednikovye lake appeared at the South Pole, covering the surface of the shield, which used to be famous for its stability. (compared to the “overheated” Greenland). It turned out that in the years 2000-2013 on the glacier Langhovde occurred nearly eight thousand lakes. This process is directly linked to global warming: most ponds emerged during the abnormally hot summer of 2012-2013

Nadlednikovye lakes in Antarctica causing concerns scientists because the South Pole is much more ice than Greenland. . If it accelerates melting, sea levels throughout the world can begin to grow rapidly, with catastrophic consequences for humanity.
