MOSCOW, December 25 – RIA Novosti. The level of Lake Baikal again one centimeter higher than the lowest low of 456 meters and can go down to the end of April for another 20-30 centimeters, said on Monday the head of Roshydromet Alexander Frolov.
“The level of the lake dropped by one centimeter below the 456 meter mark on the Pacific. We expect that the flow will continue to decrease and may reach to the end of April, the indicator below the level of 22-30 centimeters. In the past year the level was down 12 centimeters, but this year will be a deeper penetration below the marks, “- said Frolov.
In early 2015, the Russian government introduced a state of emergency in the Irkutsk region and Buryatia in connection with the extremely low level of Lake Baikal. Currently limits of the lake is limited requirements of the Government of the Russian Federation on March 26, 2001 №234. The document set a minimum acceptable level of water in the 456 meters (Pacific mark – MOT), the maximum – 457 meters (MOT).
Lake Baikal – one of the greatest lakes in the world, the lake “superlatives”: the deepest (1637 meters ), is the oldest (25 million years), with the most diverse flora and fauna including freshwater. The lake has a unique volume and quality of supply of fresh water (23.6 thousand cubic kilometers – more than 20% of world reserves). In 1996 the pond was included in the list of World Natural Heritage Site.
