NASA picture shows “sunken” Pluto heart – Lenta.ru

NASA showed a picture of a sunken heart Pluto – Plain Satellite characteristic shape, which was situated in the middle three kilometers below the surrounding terrain. The agency has also provided a new map of the dwarf planet. This was reported on the NASA website.

The satellite Plateau formed by young and smooth slabs of ice water, immersed in a soft but dense landscape of nitrogen ice. NASA determined the depth of immersion with the help of stereo images taken station New Horizons July 14, 2015.

These images allow to measure the parallax – the change in apparent position of an object depending on the position of the observer. In general, the difference between the highest and lowest points on the image reaches six kilometers. The southern part of the image artificially lightened

The updated black and white global map includes pictures of Pluto all parts of the dwarf planet, made by New Horizons in the period from 7 to 14 July 2015. Image resolution varies from 30 kilometers per pixel (left and right, facing Charon, map edges) up to 235 meters per pixel. The last image for the card were taken on April 25. All images must be sent to Earth by early autumn.

Station New Horizons July 14, 2015 at a speed of about 14 kilometers per second, close to Pluto on the minimum distance – 12, 5 thousand kilometers. At this time, the peak of the research work. New Horizons mission is to complete the work in the middle of the 2020s.

The main New Horizons program objective is to study the dwarf planet Pluto and its satellite Charon. Scientific equipment installed at the plant, to collect data on atmospheric composition and structure of Pluto’s surface, as well as interacting with Charon.
