Airplane Solar 2 Solar Impulse made its first flight within the world tour, which may be the first in history for aircraft of this type. Single plane, called the Si2, launched from Abu Dhabi and after a 12-hour flight reached Muscat in Oman.
The next five months the aircraft will fly from one continent to another. On some sections of the route, for example, over the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Si2 will fly five or six days without a break. The wingspan of the aircraft is comparable to the dimensions of the liner, but it weighs like a car family type. According to the founders of the Solar Impulse – the pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg – they hope will inspire “replacement of obsolete, polluting technologies, more efficient”.
