Station Cassini made a picture on the background of Dione Enceladus – Lenta.ru

The station Cassini made a picture of Saturn’s moons. The picture dark and close Dion is located on a lighter background and distant Enceladus. This was reported on the NASA website.

The difference in the apparent color of the satellite due to reflectivity of the heavenly bodies. At Enceladus (reaching 504 kilometers in cross-section), it is much higher than that of Dione (1,123 kilometers across).

This is due to the fact that its surface is covered by ice particles, spewing kriovulkanami on the south pole of the satellite. Enceladus in space weathering process is much slower than Dion, collecting cosmic dust particles.

The image was taken in visible light camera Cassini September 8, 2015 at a distance of 83 thousand kilometers from Dione and 364 thousand kilometers from Enceladus. Resolution in the first case up to 0.5 kilometers per pixel and 2.2 kilometers – in the second.

Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, and European Space Agency. The main goal – to study Saturn, its rings and satellites of the largest planet Titan.

October 15, 1997 from Cape Canaveral in Florida was launched automatic spaceship. July 1, 2004-th it entered orbit around Saturn. December 25, 2004 the satellite separated from the probe Huygens, which 14 January 2005 landed on Titan’s surface.
