Biologists: the extinction of one predator can cause the death of others – BBC

Biologists from the University of Exeter (UK) found that the extinction of predators of one species can have a ripple effect and provoke further extinction of other carnivores.

The study, published in the journal Current Biology , describes an experiment in which were created by the experimental community several species of aphids and their natural enemies, parasitoids wasps. As a result, it was found that the removal of one species of wasps resulted in an increased rate of disappearance and other axes.

This effect was achieved because of the death of parasitoids resulted in a population growth of aphids, which, in turn, replaced the other types of aphids and became a difficult target for the remaining operating systems, and eventually die out completely wasps. This unique experience has proven that the disappearance of living organisms affects not merely the absence of food.

The scientists believe that their findings will help their colleagues working in the field of conservation of biological diversity, because instead of single-species conservation the opportunity to save and other carnivores.
