Russian scientists from the National Research Technological University MISA (Moscow) using nanotubes and nanospheres of boron nitride have learned to give the characteristics of aluminum steel.

The head of the Russian project Dmitri Golberg said that managed to give the properties of the steel to aluminum, but the project is very expensive and work is under way to reduce the cost of this method.

The researchers received funding as early as 2011, in the amount of 150 million rubles, it is possible to acquire the necessary equipment and a specialized microscope. But the purchase of the necessary equipment has been spent almost 75 percent of the allocated funds, adds rosred.ru.

Now, researchers are developing a promising composite based on aluminum – stronger than steel and lighter than regular aluminum.

Preparation of metal, light as aluminum, but is 25 times more durable, made possible by the unique in Russia and in the world of new technologies of hardening materials using boron nitride nanotubes. In the short term, researchers from Russia are going to exceed the strength of steel by 2-3 times, informs vesti.ru.

At present the University has applied for an extension of mega-grants for 2 years with funding of 60 million rubles. Half of this sum under the terms of the competition is to highlight the MISA. While the cost of the project is high, it takes time to reduce the cost of manufacturing of innovative material and reach the industrial scale, however, a unique development is already interested in several organizations, including the “Rusal” and “Skolkovo».

Scientists believe that Russia reached a new level of studies of this nature, and in a few years it will take a leading place among the tech countries.
