American rover “Kyuriositi” / Curiosity / achieved the main goal of his mission to the Red Planet – Mountain Eolida / unofficial name – Mount Sharp / and is preparing for its drilling in the coming days. This was announced at a press conference in Washington, Director of Planetary Research of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration / NASA / Jim Green.
“Kyuriositi” landed on the surface of Mars for more than two years ago, will take soil samples in order to determine its structure and chemical composition. To accomplish this task, he will start next week, said Green.
He noted that the mountain Eolida located on the territory of Gale Crater, which has a diameter greater than 150 km. “This hill is great interest among scientists from the research point of view of new breeds that will help create a clearer picture of the surface of the Red Planet,” – said the representative of NASA. In his opinion, “this mission will open a new chapter in the exploration of Mars, around which is still a lot of mysteries.”
One of the leaders of the “Kyuriositi” Caltech scientist John Grotzinger stressed that “the journey to the mountain Eolida, located 8 km from the landing site of the rover, had a long and complex, as it has repeatedly faced obstacles in its path. ”
This will be the third in a drill that will produce “Kyuriositi” on the Red Planet. Last time the spacecraft used his rig in early 2014 at the foot of Gale Crater, before that – in a small basin, located near the site of its landing on Mars in 2013. Samples obtained from this place rocks contained evidence of the existence of an ancient lake.
NASA believe that at this time with the help of “Kyuriositi” scientists will be able to get valuable information about the Red Planet. It is assumed that the rover’s mission to study the mountains Eolida last two months.
“Kyuriositi” arrived on Mars August 6, 2012 to explore for 687 Earth days Gale Crater. The device reaches 2.8 m in length and weighs 900 kg. He is twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any NASA spacecraft from the previously delivered to the Red Planet. In this research lab three pairs of wheels 50 cm, each of which is driven by an individual power plant. Front and rear suspension rover equipped with a rotary mechanism. The device is able to overcome obstacles up to 75 cm and make a U-turn on the spot.
This project cost NASA $ 2.5 billion.
